Fort Lewis McChord, also known as Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) is a U.S military installation. It is home to the I Corps and 62d Airlift Wing. The base is located 14.6 km south-south-west of Tacoma, Washington and falls under the jurisdiction of the United States Army Joint Base Headquarters, (JBLM). The base has an active population of nearly 210,000 inhabitants, making it the fourth largest military installation worldwide in terms of the number of inhabitants.
Fort Lewis McChord is an amalgamation of the United States Army’s Fort Lewis and the United States Air Force’s McChord Air Force Base. The merger took place on 1 February 2010 as per the recommendations in 2005 by the Base Realignment and Closure Commission.
The history of the base can be traced back to 1916. Local civilian businessmen wanted the creation of a military base in the Puget Sound area and were backed by a military survey team that approved a military post to be constructed near American Lake. A group of Washington voters and businessmen then endorsed a donation of land near American Lake to the United States government.
The base, formerly known as Camp Lewis, served as a critical training center for United States soldiers during World War I. Additional construction was later taken up and the camp officially renamed to Fort Lewis in 1927. It grew to be a training and mobilization center for all services and is the only Army power-projection base west of the Rocky Mountains in the United States.
Fort Lewis McChord is a CenturyLink Internet City. The efficiency of the base, linking it nationally and internationally depends largely on Internet connectivity which is provided by CenturyLink. Download speeds are in the region of 1 GBPS and upload speeds between 2 to 1000 MBPS.
