Gig Harbor is the name of both a bay on Puget Sound and a city on its shore in Pierce County, Washington, United States. The population was 7,126 at the 2010 census. Gig Harbor is one of several cities and towns that claim to be “the gateway to the Olympic Peninsula”.

Gig harbor is a city situated in Pierce county and boasts of being one of the many cities which provides a gateway access to Olympic Peninsula. According to the US census Bureau, this city has got a total landmass of 15.44 km2 with 0.03 km2 of it being covered with water. As of the year 2010, Gig harbor had a total population of 7,126people and a density of 1,197.6 individuals per any given square mile.
History
The foundation of this city can be dated back to 1840 when Captain Charles Wilkes docked his boat, popularly known as the captain gig, in the harbor for safety purposes. Latter, while publishing the Wilkes map in 1841, this captain named the area Gig harbor and it has since been referred by that name. However, it was not until 1867 when some economic activities; fishing, started to be witnessed in the area. This was brought about by some immigrants from Norway and other places who had come to fish in the region and latter established permanent residences in this area. Upon the city’s incorporation in 1946, many other economic activities did sprout. Some of these were the boat building and logging.
