Grants Pass, the seat of Josephine County, Oregon, is renowned as the gateway to the most scenic and attractive section of the Rogue River. Consequently, the city is a favored destination for fishers and especially whitewater rafters. Also, just 30 miles south of the city you find one of the top attractions of the region, the Oregon Caves National Monument.

It is this little surprise that tourism industry plays a major role in the economy of today’s Grants Pass Oregon (97526-1474). Up until the 70s, the lumber industry used to be the mainstay of the town’s economy. However, it was from around that time that the entire region of southern Oregon began to witness a steady decline in lumber production and processing. But as with many other cities and towns in this part of Oregon, Grants Pass too started to look for ways to develop a large service industry in its bid to plug the gap opened up by the decline in lumber trade.

Today, the service sector is the chief driving force behind the local economy of Grants Pass covering areas such as recreation, sports, outdoor and healthcare infrastructure. We have already mentioned the Rogue River and much of the city’s tourism is built around the river. Riverside Park on the banks of the Rouge, for example, has an art center, sports field, picnic tables, rose garden, pavilions as well as a large open playground which also play hosts to a number of summer concerts and festivals in the city. There is also Hellgate Jetboat Excursions for those who would rather board a motorized craft to see the river.

Another popular destination for both residents and visitors alike is the Wildlife Images Rehabilitation and Education Center that facilitates tours (entry by donations) all year round and the tour gives you an opportunity to watch from up close a variety of wildlife creatures including wolves, bears, eagles, and other animals. Finally, one destination you must never miss when in the city is the quirky, offbeat and frankly inexplicable Oregon Vortex House of Mystery located at Left Fork Sardine Creek Road, Grants Pass. Craziest things happen there, so be on your guard while you visit it!
