Historic Overview
The hamlet, named after one of its earliest inhabitants named George Hartselle, first appeared on maps in 1870, although it wasn’t established until 1875. In 1872, a train station on the Louisville and Nashville Railroad was built, and the town was planned with the railroad. In 1873, the first post office was created.
The first school was founded in 1883, and 1895 it adopted the name Hartselle Male and Female Academy. Up through 1908, once Morgan County High School became created, it was in operation.
Logging and wood processing was one of the main businesses that kept the city alive, especially once the train arrived. After reaching its peak at the beginning of the century, it decreased gradually, and by 1932, it was no longer a prominent industry. Additionally, Hartselle served as the county’s hub for cotton ginning.
A terrible fire destroyed all 21 buildings in the downtown area in August 1916, but the town was rebuilt. A public waterworks and an energy generating facility were erected in 1926 and 1938, respectively. There were several prominent occurrences in the area, in 1926 when a group of bandits held hostages for almost four hours while stealing around $15,000 in cash and gold.
The population of Hartselle increased as Decatur and Huntsville’s industrial regions grew, becoming a well-liked destination for commuters.
