Located about 80 miles east of Ashville and some 55 miles northwest of Charlotte, the city of Hickory lies at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains in central North Carolina. The city has a population of over 40,000 and is also the principal city in the Hickory-Morganton-Lenoir Metropolitan Area.
The city has traditionally been famous for its furniture trade and high level of craftsmanship in furniture manufacturing. The furniture trade at the city is more than 100 years old and is still thriving. At the same time, the town acts as a gateway to many scenic destinations.
Rock Barn Golf & Spa is the most popular outdoor recreation center around Hickory. Located 12 miles east of the town, the resort is famous for its beautiful golf courses and its state of the art equestrian center as well as for its excellent lodging, fine dining and spa facilities. The Lodge has five rooms with king beds that can be separately rented. However, when it comes to lodging, nothing perhaps can beat the famous “The Inn at Hickory”. This lodging facility is housed in a 1908 Georgian style colonial home at downtown Hickory. The Inn has four rooms for renting out but the most famous of them is the room Thomasville. The room features, in addition to a gilt-edged fireplace and a jetted tub, one magnificent four-poster queen bed. Add to it the gazebo and the fruit tress of the adjoining garden and you will know why The Inn enjoys the kind of reputation that it does.
However, no tour of Hickory North Carolina can be complete without having a fair idea of its immense furniture trade and the best place to witness the splendor of it is the Hickory Furniture Mart. The market is spread over four floors and there are over 100 shops and galleries showcasing the very best in wood and fiber optic furniture. Reportedly, the building receives on average 500,000 shoppers a year.
Hickory is also a place rich in history and tradition and the best places to inform yourself of it would be the Maple Grove, The Propst House and the Houk’s Chapel—the three sites carefully preserved and maintained by the town’s Hickory Landmarks Society. As you take a tour of these places alongside enjoying all the new age facilities that the town provides in abundance, you will know that Hickory is a place where the old and new co-exist in a seamless and enchanting harmony.
