Seating along the border between the Arkansas River Valley and the Boston Mountains and surrounded by a number of scenic rural towns (Kibler, Ruby, Mulberry and Dyer among others), the city of Alma Arkansas provides an ideal retreat for visitors as well as for individuals looking to move and settle down at a quiet, family friendly and community-based neighborhood.
The town is located in Crawford County, Arkansas and lies at a distance of 15 miles from Fort Smith. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 5,419. There is no data available from this census as to the racial break-up of the population. However, according to 2000 census, 94.66% of the town’s population was White while the rest was a mix of different racial backgrounds, including Black and Native Americans, Hispanic, Asians, Pacific Islanders and others. There were a total of 1,560 households in 2000 and the median household income was estimated at $28, 906 and the median family income at $34,068.
The city of Alma (72921-4012) provides ample opportunities for outdoor activities to its residents and visitors alike. There are hiking and bike trails, fishing, hunting and camping facilities and kayaking and canoeing opportunities for water sport enthusiasts. Golf is another major attraction of Alma. There are two golf courses—the River Valley Golf Course and the Eagle Crest Golf Course. The former is a 9-hole public course located off Highway 64 East and is ideal for amateur/recreational golfers. But the real pride of the city is the Eagle Crest which is an 18-hole public course designed by the champion golfer Mark Hayes and ranks as one of the finest golf courses of Arkansas.
Then there is Clear Creek Recreation Area & Campground which includes a total of 41 campsites, besides other facilities such as boat launch ramp, picnic shelter, etc. Fort Smith Park, located off Highway 71 N., is another ideal spot for outdoor enthusiasts. For arts lovers, there is the Alma Performing Arts Center which hosts a number of cultural events around the year.
