Located in Baldwin County Alabama, Elberta is a small-town seating in the southernmost tip of the state. The history of the town dates back to 1903 when a group of German immigrants, sent there by their recruiter the German-owned Baldwin County Colonization Company, settled in the area. In this, the history and the development of the town mirrors those of a number of small towns in the state, most notably Good Hope and Cullman, both located in Cullman County in Northern Alabama. According to legend, the town got its name from the Elberta variety of peach which was cultivated in those regions.

By far, the most happening event in the town is the bi-annual Elberta German Sausage Festival, held in the fourth Saturday of March and October every year. The festival is quite famous and well-known in the region and droves of people from surrounding towns flock to Elberta to attend the festival. Apart from being an occasion for the town to celebrate its German heritage, the festival acts as a fundraiser for the Elberta Volunteer Fire Department. Held at Town Park (located at the back of the Centennial Bank), the festival with its round-the-clock music (German polka as well as country and rock’n’roll), German-themed art & craft booths, food booths, Ferris wheel and of course, its sausages & sauerkrauts attracts close to 40,000 people during each edition. Reportedly, 7,000 tons of sausages are cooked every festival and they usually sell out by mid-afternoon. So, all visitors who would like a bite are encouraged to arrive early!
