Cacti and arid landscape and sun-baked sand stretching across for miles—this is the image that most commonly comes to mind when people think of the tip of southern Arizona close to the Mexican Border. Yet, you will experience an almost radically different landscape when you come to the small town of Hereford Arizona, located at an elevation of 4,200 feet in Cochise County of southern Arizona, and which is a part of the Sierra Vista-Douglas micropolitan area.
With a population of about 7,000, the quiet and serene Hereford (85615-8658) with its surrounding mountain ranges wrapped in lush foliage, the high grasslands, scattering ribbons of forest stretches and the cottonwood-lined San Pedro River will appeal to all nature lovers, whether they are looking for a short retreat from the hustle of city life or planning to stay back long term. The place is also regarded as a birdwatcher’s paradise as a great many species of birds and butterflies migrate through Hereford and the surrounding county every month of the year.
The biggest attraction around Hereford is the Ramsey Canyon Natural Preserve located a few miles east of town. The canyon falls in the Huachuca (meaning ‘thunder’ in Apache) mountain range which is also dubbed the ‘sky island’;since it rises high above the surrounding deserts to make for a wetter and cooler ecosystem. The Preserve area is ideal for birdwatching and hiking. Wild turkeys and deer are common and many different species of hummingbirds will keep you company along the hike. However, be aware of the occasional mountain lion, javelin or black bear. The area retains its beauty and charm all year round but it really comes into its own during the late fall when, thanks to its sycamores, cottonwoods and maples, the landscape transforms itself so that you will be hard put to believe that you are in the deserts of Arizona and not at some idyllic bucolic retreat of New England.
Somewhat of a similar treat awaits you at the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area located north of Hereford. You will love a morning hike along the little forest stretches that are to be found near both sides of the San Pedro River. Hereford also offers a number of fine dining options for our distinguished epicure! The Morning Star Cafe is ideal for family dining, but locals recommend the Apache Point Ranch for lovers of southwestern cuisine as well as Mesquite Tree Restaurant for those who go for seafood, steak and other staple American cuisine. As for shopping enthusiasts, those with a taste for antiques must visit the Hidden Treasure Mall antique store located by S Highway 92, Hereford.
