Located 120 miles from the state capital Little Rock and about 40 miles from Fort Smith, Ozark, along with cities of Altus, Paris and Wiederkehr Village, lies at the heart of Arkansas Wine Country. The city is a favorite place for food and rest while exploring the breathtaking natural surroundings of the place.
There is the Pig Trail Scenic Byway that cuts through the Ozark National Forest. The southern point of the trail begins 11 miles north of the town of Ozark and rolls past along majestic rock formations, a number of waterfalls and the gorgeous Mulberry River that is extremely popular among kayak and canoe enthusiasts.
There are also many other lakes and rivers in the Ozark Mountain Region for the water sports enthusiasts to revel in. For instance, the Buffalo National River with its Class I and II rapids will pose some stiff challenges to the canoe and kayak buffs. Fishers and anglers will relish the opportunity to spend full days fishing at the crystal clear water of the Crooked Creek. There are also many little swimming holes that lie nestled among rocks and towering trees at various parts of the mountains. Swimmers will revel in the shady, icy cool water of these pools.
Then there is also the famous Norfolk Lake which is rated as one of the best diving locations for skin and scuba diving in the country. Depending on the season, the pellucid, crystal clear water of the lake may allow a visibility of up to 60 feet under water.
Ozark Lake which is located inside the city limit provides plenty of fishing opportunities as well. The Aux arc Park, shaded by towering trees and stretching along the Arkansas River, offers boat launching ramps, campsites, playground and other opportunities. The place is also an ideal spot for wildlife viewing. On a good day, you can spot migrating eagles and songbirds as well as droves of ducks, geese and butterflies that pass by the region during each spring and fall.
In addition to all of the above, the town of Ozark (72949-3813) offers many other attractions that include its dams and hatcheries, museums, artist studios, caves and caverns, and much more.
