Located on the banks of the Tallapoosa River in the US state of Alabama, Tallassee is a small town with a charming family and community-oriented atmosphere. The present name of the town is a variant of Talisi which used to be a town in the Coosa Province of the Mississippian Culture that flourished in the first half of the 1st century AD. A lot of history surrounds Tallassee and its surrounding areas, especially the Tallapoosa and Elmore counties which were also the site of the historic Creek War.
However, save some historic buildings that are still standing, little of the tranquil and peaceful neighborhoods of today’s Tallassee Alabama would betray any sign of all those hectic events of the past. As per 2010 census, the city was home to 4,819 inhabitants and 1,252 families and 35% of the city’s population fell into the age bracket of 24 or younger. About 3/4th of the city’s population is White while the rest was mostly Black or African Americans (23.4%). The median family income of the city was $56,910 while the per capita income was calculated at $17,944.
The area forms part of the Devil’s Backbone geological formation and the city once had an active gold mine. Mention must be made of Tallassee Textile Mills too which, before it closed down in 2005, had seen a total of 161 years of uninterrupted production and this earns it the distinction of the longest continuously running textile mill in the country. Neither the mine nor the mill is there today, but Tallassee is still the site of a major hydroelectric power plant operated by the Alabama Power Company.
A little way out of the city and you will run into the Tallapoosa River and the waterfalls, towering trees and splendid rock formations that are to be found along the river. With its class IV and V rapids, the river makes for a fantastic destination for the adventurous canoe and kayak enthusiasts. Other recreational sites around the city include the Lake Martin Reservoir, Wind Creek State Park and Yates and Thurlow Lake.
