The city of Longview is found in Cowlitz County, Washington, towards the southwest tip of the state, and with a population of just under 40,000. The origins of the city can be attributed to the area existing as the home of the Cowlitz Indian Tribe, and to the efforts of the Long-Bell Lumber Company in the early 1900s. Led by Robert A. Long, the company constructed a complete city infrastructure in 1921 in order to house workers for various logging and mill efforts in the area. As a result, the city is home to many items on the National Register of Historic Places, which offer multiple glimpses into the past, and settler life in the 19th and 20th century. These include the Columbia Theater, Longview Bridge, the Longview Civic Center Historic District, Mills Building, and the Longview Community Church. The Columbia Theater and Peper Studio often host various performances and theater events throughout the year.
Longview is home to a wide variety of parks and outdoor recreational opportunities, the most popular being Lake Sacajawea. The lake hosts miles of trails, multiple species of trees, flowers and wildlife, the Solar System Walk, the Frank Willis Arboretum, Japanese Gardens, childrens concerts, fairs, and playgrounds, and more. You can learn more online with the use of CenturyLink Internet, Telephone, and Prism TV. Within the city limits, dozens of outdoor parks, trails, and fields showcase the greenery of the West Coast. Tourists often travel just up the highway to Castle Rock and the Mount Saint Helens National Volcanic Monument. More humorously, one can visit the famous Nutty Narrows Bridge, constructed in 1963 by Amos Peters. The “world’s most narrow bridge” acts as an animal crossing for squirrels over Olympia Way in Longview’s civic center, keeping them safe from busy traffic below.
