The city of Longwood is located in Seminole County, Florida, a little over halfway up the state, towards the East Coast. With a population of just under 15,000 residents, the city saw its beginnings after the end of the Seminole Wars during the mid to late 19th Century.  Coastal tribes would use The Senator, an ancient bald cypress tree, as a landmark to navigate over the St Johns River towards trading grounds near Spring Hammock. The Senator tree is over 3000 years old, and is a major tourist attraction near in a nature preserve near Longwood. Development and major population growth in the town didn’t take off until the 1960’s and 1970’s, triggered in part by the growing space industry and the instalment of nearby attractions like Walt Disney World.

Activities in the city include touring the Historic District, which is included on the National Register of Historic Places. Longwood is one of the oldest cities in the Seminole County area, and the Historic District showcases over 37 different structures from the early settlement era in Florida. Landmarks include the Longwood Hotel, the Inside Outside House, the Christ Episcopal Church, the Bradlee-McIntyre House, and other boutiques, stores, and cottages often built in the Queen Anne-style of architecture. Most of these buildings were constructed in the late 1800’s and form the centre and soul of the town, with City Hall and other administration buildings placed nearby. Though the city of Longwood has a rich history, its still kept up to date with the times, with CenturyLink Internet, Telephone, and Prism TV available for use.

Visitors can also tour the Longwood Memorial Gardens and Cemetery, established in 1957, should they wish to get away from the noise and movement of the city. In addition, various parks and community facilities are located in the area.
