Located on the Pajarito Plateau a few miles northwest of the city of Santa Fe, the town of Los Alamos is the county seat of Los Alamos County in northern New Mexico. The town, zip code 87544-6204, is most readily recognized as the place where the first atomic bomb was built as part of the Manhattan Project during World War II.
According to the 2010 census, the current population of the city is 12,019. One striking fact about the demographics is that the town has a significantly higher percentage of white Americans as compared to the surrounding counties of the state including Sandoval, Santa Fe and Rio Arriba. Over 35% of the population of New Mexico is of Latino or Hispanic origin while at Los Alamos, the Hispanic and Latino people make up only 15% of the population.
This can perhaps be explained by the fact that the Los Alamos National Laboratory is still the largest employer in the area and about forty percent of the employees working in the laboratory live in Los Alamos. The city of Los Alamos is also the fifth fastest growing city in the state of New Mexico. The median household income and the per capita income in the city are $98,458 and $54,067, respectively—both of which are significantly higher than those in the rest of New Mexico.
However, apart from the labratory and its research programs, it is the amazing scenery, the many gorgeous outdoor destinations, great restaurants and a number of wonderful performance venues are what drive people toward Los Alamos—both as visitors and permanent residents, many of the latter are presumed to be creative types and who have only moved to the city in the last decade or so.
Among the outdoor destinations, the National scenic Byway along Jemez Mountain Trail, the Bandelier National Monument Preserve, the Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs Resort & Spa, and the 54 mile trail in Valles Caldera are the most popular with tourists and residents alike. There are also many well-equipped and first rate sports venues in the city including the Los Alamos Skate Park, the Larry R. Aquatic Center, the City County Golf Course and the Los Alamos County Ice Rink.
