McCook Nebraska is the county seat of Red Willow County. The city has a population of 7,698 as per the 2010 census. With an unemployment rate of 3.4%, lower than the national average of 5.2%, and a steady appreciation in property rates, McCook is an attractive place for homeowners, and working professionals.

McCook was founded in 1882 when the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad was extended to the present location of McCook. The city was named after Alexander McDowell McCook, who served as a Brigadier General in the Union Army during the American Civil War.

McCook lies in the high prairies of Nebraska and the landscape inspires the same awe as the high mountains do. If you love the great outdoors, then spending a couple of days in McCook would be ideal. You can enjoy hunting, fishing, camping, birding, golfing and other outdoor recreational activities in the state recreation areas, parks, lakes, and wildlife management areas.

The Sutton House at 602 Norris Avenue was at one time the residence of distinguished architect Frank Lloyd Wright; today, it is a private residence. The Museum of the High Plains offers insight into the history of this region, the Indian tribes, the railroad, and the German POW camp that was set up in nearby Indianola. The Carnegie Library is located within the museum complex; providing a fine example of the Spanish Colonial Revival architectural style. The Historical Walking Tour that covers the heritage district is a delightful experience for lovers of old architecture and shoppers.

Dining options in McCook 69001 include El Puerto, Coppermill Steakhouse, Joltin Jo’s Espresso, and others.
