Mercer Island is a city that is located in the state of Washington in the King County. This city’s location is on an island that bears the same name. The island seats on the southern portion of Lake Washington. As of the 2010 population census, the United States Census Bureau stated that this city had an estimated population of 22,699 people. It makes the Island the most populated in a lake within the States.
History and Education
The city is named after the Mercer family of Seattle that first settled in the area in the 1870s. In this, the Mercer brothers would frequently row to the Island and back to Seattle in their hunting, berry gathering, and fishing quests. As of 1889, the first gilded resort was built in the area by C C Calkins which latter was burnt by a mysterious fire in1908. However, this resort contributed greatly to the establishment of a more permanent population in the area and towards the incorporation from East Seattle in 1960. Regarding education, the Mercer Island School District constitutes of 7 common schools. 4 are primary, 1 Middle, 1 High and the other alternative secondary schools.
