Located at the nexus between Oregon coast and Pacific beaches, the City of Montesano is the county seat of Grays Harbor County in southwest Washington. As of the 2010 census, the population of the city was 3,976 but there are about another 12,000-people living outside city limits who regard Montesano as their hometown.
Although traditionally known for its logging, agricultural activities and governmental services, the unique location of Montesano has made it a favorite destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Boating and fishing are among the most popular activities enjoyed by the residents and visitors of Monsanto. The place provides easy access to a number of scenic and beautiful lakes and rivers such as Satsop, Wynoochee and Chehalis—all of which are located a distance of few miles from Montesano. Anglers throughout the coast are lured to the sturgeon, steelhead and salmon that are found in abundance in the local rivers of Montesano.
Lake Sylvia State Park recreational area is another big attraction of Montesano. The park is home to a number of beautiful hiking trails and also provides facilities for overnight camping. But the campers will savor more than an opportunity to camp overnight by the gorgeous Wynoochee Lake which lies nestled at the foot of the Olympic Mountains some 28 miles north of Montesano.
And while at Montesano, make sure to take a stroll through the downtown district of the city with its mix of eclectic shops and restaurants has a quaint charm of its own. Another landmark site of Montesano is the century old Grays Harbor County Courthouse. The three-story structure will give you an idea of the old town architecture of the place, but of even greater interest are the inside murals that document many past events of the local history.
