Located on the southernmost point of Puget Sound and 60 miles southwest of the largest city in Washington State, Seattle, the city of Olympia is the state capital of Washington and also the county seat of Thurston County. According to a 2015 estimate from the Office of Financial Management, Olympia had a population of about 50,000 people.
This actually makes Olympia a special case among all other state capitals in the US. In a sufficiently significant majority of the states, the state capital is usually among one of the most populated cities in that state. In the case of Olympia, however, the city ranks 22nd in terms of population and it is not even one of the largest cities in the Washington state. In fact, there is a bit of a history surrounding this which may interest a few. The municipality of Olympia was not incorporated as a town until 1859, yet as soon as the Washington territory was formed, back in 1853, Governor Isaac Stevens immediately chose Olympia as the capital of the territory. Over the years however, other cities, most notably Seattle, Vancouver, Tacoma, Port Townsend, and Steilacoom, have challenged the historical precedent and have vied for the ‘capital-ship’;but as it happens, to no avail!
Many may also be interested to find that there are two sister cities of Olympia, both located in Asia. The first is the Yashiro Town in Japan, which has been a sister city to Olympia since 1981. The second is the Chinese city of Nan Chang. The latter agreement went into effect in August 2010.
There is another interesting fact about Olympia which may take even die-hard rock fans by surprise. This relates to the short-lived but the superlative rock band of Nirvana. Many are of the belief that Kurt Cobain, the front man of Nirvana, hailed from the city of Seattle. However, the fact is that Kurt was born in Aberdeen but later moved to Olympia and it is here that he met KristNovoselic and together they founded the band which would shortly go one to create history in the field of rock.
That is just about enough trivia. As for the current city itself, Olympia makes for a great place to visit and to live. Pleasant summers and mild winters make the place ideal for outdoor recreation. The city maintains as many as forty public parks where both children and adults can indulge in many recreational activities. Many of the public trails in Olympia lead to saltwater beaches. In addition, the city is located at the gateway to Olympic Peninsula which means that you are always one to two hours’ distance from many amazing regional recreational attractions;be it beachcombing, skiing in the Olympic Mountains, mountain biking or hiking.
