Located in Washington north-central part of the state, the city of Omak is in the just bellow hills of the Okanogan Highlands. Native American horse people were lived in this city, the Syilx who are also called Okanogan. The city gets its name from the Salishan word “Omache” which means “plenty” or “good medicine.” To facilitate farming in this area, the Okanogan Irrigation Project was designed upon completion of which, in 1910, farmers poured in and cultivation of watermelons, peaches, apples, and plums. Officially incorporated on February 11, 1911, Omak, WA is a part of Greater Omak metropolitan region. Besides being the largest municipality in Okanogan County, it makes for the largest urban cluster in the region.
The Stampede Arena where the Suicide Race is hosted annually on the second weekend of August puts Omak, WA on the map for rodeo and equestrian enthusiasts from around the world. It is an ideal destination for outdoor recreational activities with eight general recreational complexes to pick from, including but not limited to Eastside Park, Civic League Park, and the latest addition Dalton Klessig Park. The city is also home to the Okanogan National Forest, the largest forest on the West Coast that offers numerous skiing regions, walking, hiking, and cycling trails, and more.
