Located about 6 miles to the northeast of Lincoln City and about 12 miles to the south of Cloverdale, Otis Oregon is an unincorporated community in Lincoln County, Oregon. Oregon Route 18 that runs along the Salmon River and is used by throngs of Willamette Valley residents on their way to Lincoln City passes by Otis Junction which is about half mile away from the very small community that is Otis (97368-9774).
Until only recently, many from the neighboring districts used to speak about Otis as one of a handful of little Oregon towns that you could actually buy and own. The reason for this was that Otis was put up for sale twice in the last two decades—once in 1999 and then again in 2004. The story had actually made the national press. The then owner Vivian Lematta (who left Otis back in 1957 and now lives someplace East) pegged the price of the town at $3 million and had failed to find an owner.
That however has changed since Gary Fromm, who owns the Green Acres Beach & Trail Rides located in the neighboring lands of Pacific City, eventually purchased Otis sometime in late 2015. According to Fromm, his main intention behind the purchase was to find proper shelter for a number of his horses during the winter since the sale had included, among other thing, a 25 stall horse barn.
Happily for Fromm, he now has the barn plus 190 acres of land on which stand the Otis Post Office, a gas station, the market, a corn dog stand, and the Otis Café. The rest of it is pasture land. Many who take the Route 18through Otis on a regular basis know well enough about the Otis Café which is a popular stopover for cars on that route. And according to their testimony, you get some amazing food there at the café. The establishment specializes on breakfast menu items, but to go by the variety and the quality of food they serve, the café is miles away from your routine breakfast joint that you find in hundreds along highways and byways of the United States.
There were already a handful of Holiday Rental Houses with beautiful lake front views and other facilities falling between Otis and Lincoln City and they were popular enough with family and group vacationers. Now, with all these new developments which are hopefully around the corner, the community of Otis would surely grow into a more vibrant and diverse one.
