Portland is the largest city in the state of Oregon. The city has an estimated population of 632,309 and the population of the metropolitan area reaches up to 2.3 million. Yet, Portland, in many ways, is far from the impression the epithet big city normally conjures up in our mind. Well, that is because Portlanders have a reputation of being the most self-satisfied city tribe in the whole country. And this also brings us to the question of rain.

Portland (59202-2062), and Oregon in general, are well-known for rain. And many wrongly assume that it is one of the rainiest cities in the US. And yet, the truth is far from that. There are far too many cities in the country which annually receive more rain than Portland. Summers are sunny and clear enough. The rain only starts pouring in earnest during the winter months (2-3 months most). Other times, if it rains, it is mostly a drizzle and a morning drizzle often gives way to a dazzling noon. Anyhow, the point is, don’t carry an umbrella. As to the famous bosky setting of the city, all you need is head to Forest Park which with its 70 miles of hiking and walking trails, and is the largest wooded urban park in the country, barely a 10-minute drive away from downtown Portland. And if you are willing to go further, possibilities seem to be endless! There is Mount Hood an hour’s drive away to east of the city; to the west, an hour and half drive will take you right to Pacific Ocean; then there is the high desert of central Oregon, a three hour drive from Portland; 45 miles up the gorgeous Columbia River gorge, there is Hood River; and the city is itself located at the confluence of Columbia and Willamette Rivers—the intersection point a treat for nature lovers.
