“Velkommen til Poulsbo!” or Welcome to Poulbo if you prefer. Poulsbo, Washington, also known as “Little Norway”, resides on the Washington peninsula in Kitsap County. It is nestled away in the Liberty Bay area of the Puget Sound. The towns last reported census listed a population of 10,850 people, and a total area of 4.5 square miles.
Prior to Euro-American settlement, Poulsbo and the surrounding area were inhabited by the Suquamish people for well over 5000 years. They populated to area that is today Poulsbo, as well as the coastline of Liberty Bay (once called Dog Fish Bay).
The snow-covered Cascade mountains to the west, and the inland waterways to the east reminded early Scandinavian settlers of the “fjords” of Norway. With the arrival of the Scandinavians, Jorgen Eliason founded the town, and it was later incorporated in December 18, 1907.
This charming town has much to offer to visitors. Listed as one of “The 7 Must Visit Places in Washington”, tourists can sample a variety of local breweries to quench their thirst. After a proper beer (for those of legal drinking age), a visit Sluy’s Bakery for the famous Viking Donuts is a must do!
For those who admire the waterways and abundant local sea life, The Sea Discovery Museum on the south end of town will give you what you’re looking for. If you’re a history buff (much like I am), then a visit to the Poulsbo Historical Society Museum will give you an in-depth look into the history and day to day life of the early settlers.
Still not satisfied? Well, for the cultured and lovers of art, the Poulsbo Art Walk has what you’re looking for! Every second Saturday of the month from 5-8pm, the local art galleries open to the public to peruse the artwork, and chat with various local artists.
