Rainer, a picturesque town on the south bank of the Columbia River was founded in 1851 by Charles E. Fox, the first postman of the town. The first name of the town was Eminence which evolved into Fox’s Landing and finally to Rainer, derived from Mount Rainer in Washington which can be seen from the hills around the city. The town was officially incorporated in 1851.
For the major part of the last quarter of the twentieth century, Rainer was primarily well-known for the location of the Trojan Nuclear Power Plant, the only commercial nuclear reactor in Oregon supplying power to Portland.
