Red Lodge (59068-9311), the county seat of Carbon County, Montana, is a city of extraordinary beauty and acts as a gateway to some of the most beautiful natural destinations in this country. Nestled right into the lap of the Beartooth Mountains, the city falls just 60 miles southeast of the world famous Yellowstone National Park. But even closer to the city, you will find just about any number of breathtaking mountain trails and byways that offer a flurry of recreational and outdoor opportunities to everyone who loves nature, the mountains and the clean air.
Yet, for all that, the city is more than just a basecamp for Great Outdoors. The official website of the city has this curious description in its introductory page—’Living in Red Lodge Montana is a full-contact sport.’ And once you step foot into the town, you will know why. This small community of about 2,000 residents exudes a beautiful vibe of friendliness and hospitality that is almost infectious. There are friendly locals to be found everywhere and no matter where you go—the many eateries and shops in the town or the beautiful boutiques at downtown Red Lodge—you can’t escape the vibrant and unique character of the town, full of warmth, gaiety and goodwill.
As for trails, you will of course find no dearth of them in and around Red Lodge. Within city limits, there is the Red Lodge Airport Trail and the Coal Miners Park Trail and a few miles out of town, a whole host of beautiful trails most of which lie on the West Fork of Rock Creek. Notable among them are Palisades Trail, Nichols Creek Trail, Willow Creek Trail and Silver Run Trail System. Other Beartooth Mountain hikes include Meteetsee Trails, Face of the Mountain, Lake Fork and Mount Maurice.
You can enjoy snow sports activities at Red Lodge Ice Rink at Lions Park, Red Lodge Nordic Center and Silver Run Cross Country Ski Forest Service trails; and water sports at the Rock Creek. If you are in time, you can even take part at the Box Car Slalom race organized annually by the Beartooth Paddler’s Society.
