History

Although Sahuarita, Arizona, was only incorporated in 1994, people had resided there for a long time. The Native American communities still call this country home and are gifted with a rich cultural heritage that their forebears created. Indigenous people lived in settlements along the Santa Cruz River around 4,000 years ago, where canals supported intense cultivation.

Corn, squash, beans, and other crops were all grown by the Tohono O’odham and the Hohokam before them. They also collected edible wild plants. Father Eusebio Kino met these established native communities when the Spanish came and established Mission San Xavier del Bac in 1692. Just northwest of what is now Sahuarita, O’odham laborers started erecting the current mission structure in 1783. In 100 years, the community will be known as Sahuarit-O, after the Sahuarita Ranch, which ran here from 1879 to 1886.

After an additional 100 years, Sahuarita will be well-known for its extensive pecan orchards along Nogales Highway. The Titan Missile Museum houses artifacts from the Cold War, and the American Smelting and Refining Company (ASARCO) Mineral Discovery Center offers information on copper mining. The Whipple Observatory, a telescope facility run by Harvard University at the summit of Mount Hopkins in the Santa Rita Mountains, is located just south of Sahuarita.
