Sequim along with the nearby community of Port Angeles make up the major population base on Olympic Peninsula. Although according to the 2010 census, the city of Sequim in Clallam County, Washington had a population of 6,606, with a lot more people living in the areas surrounding Sequim. According to an unofficial estimate, 28,000 people are currently living in the area.
Located along the shores of the gorgeous Dungeness River and on the north of the Olympic Mountains, the area is full of natural splendor and has access to amazing water, forest, mountain, lake and river activities. This partly explains the influx of retirees (mostly from California, Seattle and Puget Sound regions) that Sequim has seen in the recent years and which has led to a sudden and dramatic increase in population in the area.
Another factor that may have contributed to this migration phenomenon is the fact that, unlike many contiguous areas which largely experience very wet rainforest climate round the year, Sequim receives very little rain per year. This is due to the fact that the place falls within the rain shadow zone of the Olympic Mountains and is thus protected from any heavy rainfall. This has in fact earned the place its nickname of ‘Sunny Sequim.’
From the rich farmland of the Dungeness Valley on the north to the rugged peaks and forests of the Olympic Mountains south of Sequim to its charming Downtown district dotted with quaint boutiques, bistros and coffee shops, Sequim Washington and its surrounding areas offer a flurry of exploration opportunities to the interested visitor.
You may also be interested to know that Sequim is dubbed the ‘Lavender Capital of North America’. We had talked about the southern France-like sunny and dry climate of Sequim and this actually makes it the ideal place to grow lavender. The town celebrates its lavender heritage at the Sequim Lavender Weekend held the third weekend of July every year. So, if you are at Sequim in July, make sure not to miss it. Otherwise, you may visit one of the many lavender and organic produce farms at Sequim which remain open for u-pick in the summer months.
