Also known as Christmastown or the Evergreen City, Shelton (98584-7056) is found in the Mason County, State of Washington and sits on a total area of 6.05 square miles. The city was named in the honor of David Shelton who was an agent to the territorial legislature. It was incorporated in 1890 and has since grown into a very important town. The city grew as a result of its rich agricultural background with economic activities carried out including logging, farming, oyster cultivation and ranching. Companies rose from this; Puget Sound’s Oakland Bay and Simpson Timber Company being the most profitable.

With warm-summer Mediterranean climate, high rainfall and relatively mild temperatures that get extremely hot in summer and very cold in winter, the city attracts quite a large population. As per the census in 2010, there were 9,834 people and a population density of 1,707.3 inhabitants per square mile. This was a huge growth from the initial 648 people in the census of 1890. The population comprises of Whites (78.9%), African Americans, Asians, Native Americans and Hispanics. The ages are well distributed with the median being 33.1 years.

The city is education oriented having numerous good schools that form the Shelton School District. They include Evergreen, Bordeaux and Mountain View Elementary Schools, Olympic Middle School, Oakland Bay Junior High, the Shelton High School and the CGOICE Alternative School, which has classes from kindergarten all through to high school. Shelton Washington has been the home of quite a number of distinguished people such as Desmond Dalworth Koch- an Olympic bronze medalist, Jerry Lambert- film actor who has featured in ABC sitcom and SONs and Daughters as well as Karol Kennedy- the 1952 Winter Olympics silver medalist. Other prominent people include Caleb Schlauderaff, Lawson H. M. Sanderson and Justin Ena.
