South Hill is located in Pierce County, Washington, just to the south of Puyallup River Valley. The area flourished around the 1880s after a military road was built through the location in the 1850s. Several logging camps, hunting grounds, and farms sprang up in this location. It also helped that South Hill fell in the main route to the towns of Kapowsin and Eatonville.
The initial sparse population grew quickly after World War II when the condition of the roads improved and people could further commute to Tacoma, Fort Lewis, and Seattle. As per the 2000 census, there were 31,623 people, 10,929 households, and 8721 families residing in South Hill. By the 2010 census, the population had grown to 52,431 and then 63,000 according to the 2017 City Population DE USA.
Most commercial areas in South Hill are located along the main thoroughfare, the Meridian Avenue (SR161). There are several retail shopping centers, suburban housing, residential neighborhoods, and apartment/condo complexes.
People passing by or visiting South Hall for a day or two of relaxation have plenty to do.
Check out the Carbon River that flows about 30 miles from its source, the Carbon Glacier on Mount Rainer to join the Puyallup River at Orting. Then there is the 59-acres Bradley Lake Park that includes a 12-acre lake. The outdoor types can visit the Foothills Trail, a non-motorized rail-trail that runs uninterrupted for 15 miles from Puyallup, Washington to Orting. It is a must-visit place for cyclists, walkers, inline skaters, joggers, and horse riders.
South Hill is a CenturyLink Internet City. The residents have the advantage of high-speed Internet connectivity both nationally and internationally provided by CenturyLink. Download speeds are in the region of 1 GBPS and upload speeds between 2 to 1000 MBPS.
