The city has a population of 13,353 according to the 2010 census making it the 14th largest city in Nebraska, covering a total area of 5.96 square miles. In 1804, famous explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark passed through the South Sioux City area on their way west. On the Nebraska side of the Missouri River European settlements began as early as 1854. South Sioux City wasn’t incorporated until 1887, when Covington and Stanton were merged by approval from a special election thus forming South Sioux City.
