Springville is a city in Utah County. The population was 29,466 at the 2010 census. It lies between Salt Lake City and Provo-Orem. Other neighboring areas include Mapleton and Spanish Fork. The name Springville emanated from “Hobble Creek” or “Art City” as it was known to be an art community for many years. The area has been named one of America’s best small towns by Forbes magazine.
History
Father Silvestre Vélez de Escalante founded the first mission on this land in 1776. He established his headquarters here after he had explored most of what became southern Utah. In 1847 Brigham Young sent missionaries into the region. They were followed by settlers who came mainly from New England states. By 1850 more than 1,000 people were living in Springville. A schoolhouse was built that year. This building still stands today. The town proliferated during the 1860s when railroads began running through the area. At its peak, Springville boasted over 2,500 residents. However, growth slowed down considerably after 1900 due to the Great Depression. During World War II, however, the economy boomed again because of defense spending. After the war ended, the number of jobs decreased drastically. Many businesses closed their doors. Today, Springville remains primarily residential, with some commercial activity along Main Street. There are also several churches located throughout the city.
