Taos is a town steeped in history and legends, both ancient and of more recent origin. Aside from being the county seat of Taos County with a population of 5,716, there is so much to do, see, and savor in this town located in the north-central region of New Mexico that any visitor is bound to get stumped by the phenomenon that is Taos. Not for nothing, it inspired such towering figures from the world of art and literature such as D.H. Lawrence, Georgia O’Keefe and Aldous Huxley, among others.
The most amazing thing about Taos is that so many layers of history are to be found juxtaposed together in barely 5.4 square miles. There is a dinosaur quarry at the Ghost Ranch, where O’Keefe created her famous images of the southwest. The region is in fact believed to have been discovered and settled by nomadic tribes thousands of years ago. There is also the living community of Pueblo Indians at the famous Taos Pueblo, with buildings the tribe today believes to have been built between 1000 and 1450 AD. The settlement is designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and is also a National Historic Landmark. In mid-16th century when Conquistador Hernando de Alvarado came by the place, he believed it to be the fabled City of Gold, Eldorado!
Then there is the Taos Plaza, located right at the heart of the Taos Historic District, built no less than 300 years ago. At the Plaza too, stands the La Fonda hotel which is where Lawrence used to live when he first came to the town and it is at this hotel that he drew many of his famous erotic paintings (he later had his own house in the town as did the famous art patron Mabel Dodge Luhan). In the Plaza, as well as in the rest of the Historic District, you will find many beautiful shops, galleries, hotels, houses and restaurants which display a dazzling mixture of architectural styles, which include but not limited to, Spanish Colonial style buildings as well as church, houses and abodes built in Mission Revival, Pueblo Revival, Old Pueblo and Territorial styles.
Then there is the Old Taos County Courthouse, located at the Plaza as well. Movie buffs will be intrigued to know that this is the building where Jack Nicholson, along with Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper, was locked up in the iconic indie film of the 60’s, Easy Rider. The lovers of westerns will also readily recognize the Rio Grande George Bridge of Taos which, at the time of its construction, was the second longest bridge in the country and is still considered by many as the most beautiful steel bridge in the southwest.
