Thornton is located on the northeast side of the Denver-Aurora-Broomfield quadrant of the Colorado Metropolitan Statistical Area and is 16 km from downtown Denver. It is a home rule municipality in Adams and Weld counties of the State of Colorado. Thornton is growing at a fast pace with the United States Census Bureau reporting the population as in April 2010 to be 118,772, a 44% increase over the 2000 Census of 82,384.
Thornton is a comparatively new city in the United States. The area consisted solely of farmlands till 1953 when Sam Hoffman purchased a lot off Washington Street 11 km north of Denver and laid out the fully-planned community in Adams County. Thornton was the first town to provide full municipal services from a single tax levy. The place was named after the former Governor of Colorado Dan Thornton.
The development of the new community started with the formation of the Thornton Community Association in 1954. By the end of 1955, Thornton had over 5,500 residents in 1,200 houses. In 1956, Thornton was incorporated as a city and Oyer G. Leary was elected the first mayor.
There are many attractions in Thornton to keep the visitors to the city entertained and happy. The Crazed Corn Field Maze is perfect for a family day out with a petting zoo, mini-train, and pony rides. There are more than 25 major parks in Thornton such as Cherry Park, Cherrywood Park, Community Park, North Star Park, Trail Winds East, Trail Winds West, Woodglen Brookshire Park, and Yorkborough Park to name a few.
