Troy is a city and the county seat of Pike County, Alabama, United States. It was incorporated on February 4, 1843.Between 1763 and 1783, the area where Troy is currently located was part of the British West Florida colony. After 1783, the region was brought under the jurisdiction of the USA.
Troy had a population of around 600 at the outbreak of the American Civil War in 1861. In 1863, the 57th Alabama Infantry Regiment of Troy was formed. The soldiers from the regiment fought at the Battle of Peachtree Creek on July 20, 1864. But generally, Troy was spared the ravages of the war.
As of the 2010 census, the population of Troy was 18,033, and is today, considered to be one of the fastest-growing cities in Alabama.Troy University is the fourth-largest university in terms of enrolment in Alabama.
Troy has a vibrant cultural heritage. The Troy Fest originally called the Jean Lake Memorial Art Showwas started in 1982 and has been an annual attraction since. The festival is held in the downtown square of Troy and showcases the best artists of the region. In 2001, the TroyFest was named the “Official Year of Alabama Art Event”.
Not to be missed is the Troy Pioneer Days held every year by the Pioneer Museum of Alabama. The event features horse and wagon rides, trips on the Pioneer Express, and Native American camps with demonstrations of candle-making, spinning, weaving, quilt-making, blacksmithing, drumming, and dance.
