Located at the southernmost tip of the Puget Sound, Tumwater holds the distinction of being the first community of Washington and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, Tumwater is a city in Thurston County and had a population of 17,371 as of the 2010 census.

At present, the area remains bounded by the Deschutes River Falls, The Schmidt House, Tumwater Falls Park and Interstate 5, but the district was known to be occupied by Salish Indians in the prehistoric times and later. Today Tumwater, as well as other cities of Lacey and Olympia in Thurston County, owe their existence to a group of 30 individuals, all representatives of The Hudson’s Bay Company, who built the first permanent settlement at Puget Sound in 1845. In those olden days, the area was known as the ‘New Market.’ It was only in 1863 that the settlement was baptized Tumwater, a word that in Chinook meant ‘falling water’.

The history and the heritage of the town are well documented by the Crosby House Museum of Tumwater. You can get an even better feel of it once you visit the oldest burial ground in the county—The Pioneer Cavalry Cemetery or explore the nooks and corners of the historic Henderson House of Tumwater.

However, Tumwater (98501-4586) of today has come a long way from those days of the past but the discerning visitor can still get enough intimation of the strong community feeling that bounds the residents of the city together. The city of Tumwater Washington recognizes and values the importance of art, culture, recreation, biodiversity and ecology. There are as many as nine parks in the city where both children and adults can enjoy different sports, river access, hiking trails and picnic areas, not to mention an opportunity to reconnect with the nature and the gorgeous natural habitat of the area. Golfers can also hone-in their skills at the beautiful Tumwater Valley Golf Course which offer breathtaking views of the nearby Mount Rainier and Deschutes River.
