Union Gap is a city in Yakima County, Washington, United States. The “Gap” in the name is because of a small gap in the east-west ranging hill-line at 46.529N, 120.472W through which passes Highways 97 & 82, the Yakima River, Thorp Road, and the Ahtanum creek.
The City, a part of Yakima Nation, is now the retail hub for the entire Yakima Valley because of the Valley Mall and other businesses that thrive here.
The origin of the city of Union Gap goes back to the 1880s. From being Yakima City, it was officially incorporated as Union Gap on November 23, 1883. When bypassed by the Northern Pacific Railroad in December 1884, over 100 buildings were moved on rollers and horse teams to the local site of the depot. The new city was named North Yakima and in 1918, was changed to simply Yakima. The original town to the south was dubbed Union Gap.
As of the 2010 census, there were 6,047 people, 2,061 households, and 1420 families living in Union Gap.
There are several sightseeing spots in Union Gap. Top of the list is the Central Washington Agricultural Museum, the largest museum of its kind in the Pacific Northwest. See the antique farm equipment at the Pioneer Show every August. Feel the power and emotion of Washington’s largest Civil War enactment at the old Town Days celebration every June.
For the gourmets at heart, Union Gap has plenty to offer. There are several eateries, from popular chains like Famous Dave’s, Applebees, Panera, and Buffalo Wild Wings to local favorites Miners, Sea Galley, Stick Drive-in, and Los Hernandez Tamales.
Residents and visitors to the city have access to high-speed Internet connectivity. Union Gap is a CenturyLink Internet City with connectivity speeds of 1 GBPS for downloads and 2 to 1000 MBPS for upload.
