Washington North Carolina (also referred to as The Original Washington or Little Washington) lies 20 miles west of Greenville on the Pamlico River. Washington was established in 1776 on land that was donated by Col. James Bonner, and named after President George Washington.
Washington (27889-4273) has 10,000 residents according to the 2010 census and is a fine example of a Southern town; drawing visitors wishing to enjoy an idyllic weekend fishing and boating on Pamlico River. Historical buildings downtown and vintage architecture of buildings on Main Street testify to the aesthetic sensibilities of the townsfolk from the very early days. Downtown also houses many antique shops. You can easily spend a day unearthing that one piece of treasure that will serve as a cool memento of your visit to Washington.
The townsfolk love to come together for events, and there are many to choose from—The East Carolina Wildlife Arts Festival, BoCo Music Festival and Marine Market, Washington Summer Festival, Music in the Streets, and many more.
For a town its size, Washington offers more than its fair share of eating options. Down on Main Street and On the Waterfront offer excellent seafood. Market Street Pub, with its live music and food, is an excellent venue for events. Along with a plethora of places to eat, shopping on the historic waterfront district is almost a therapeutic experience. Art galleries and studios, massage therapy clinics, garment shops, spas, used furniture stores, etc. are some of the options you will find in Washington, North Carolina.
Washington is the quintessential small American town with a rich past and an aware community.
