The roots of the town can be traced back to the rail depot created by the Northern Pacific and Montana Railroad in September 1889. It was E.G. Brooke who named the depot, inspired by a similar town he stayed in Illinois while working his way westward. On September 3, 1890, the Commissioners of Jefferson County accepted and filed the Townsite of Whitehall.

Within an hour’s driving radius, there are five ski resorts, seven major rivers, mountain lakes for fishing and backpacking, three hot springs, and four lakes for boating. Additionally, there are several snowmobiling trails for winter riding and summer trail rides with the mountain ranges around the valley providing great opportunities for big game hunting.
A must-visit place in Whitehall is the Lewis and Clark Caverns, Montana’s first official State park covering an area of 3040 acres. The caves are safe and electrically lit and offer a fascinating underground world of natural caves with spectacular stalactites, stalagmites, rock icicles, and frozen waterfalls.
Whitehall is a fascinating mix of the traditional and the modern. Side-by-side with the history-rich tourist spots, the town is a Century Link Internet City offering high-speed Internet to the residents and visitors through DSL and Fiber connectivity with the rest of the country.
