Winfield is a city in Lincoln County, Missouri, United States with a population of 1404 as per the 2010 census. The town, laid out in 1879 was named after Winfield Scott Killam who was the original owner of the site where the town stands today. A Post Office has been operating in Winfield since 1880.
On June 18, 2008, a severe disaster struck the town. A 150-foot breach in a primary levee along the Mississippi River inundated the town and claimed dozens of homes and large tracts of farmland. It prompted emergency officials of Lincoln County to order the evacuation of all residents east of Winfield. It was over a year before the town could limp back to a certain degree of normalcy.
About a year later, Winfield again hit the headlines in the USA as well as the rest of the world. On April 9, 2009, residents elected their popular Mayor Harry Stonebraker to a record fourth term in office. Nothing unusual in that except that he had died of a heart attack several weeks before! This odd incident happened because the ballot papers had already been printed and absentee voting had begun. Winfield had to appoint a temporary Mayor till a special election was held in April 2010.
Winfield is a gourmet’s delight for both the residents and tourists. There are several restaurants serving cuisines from around the world. Fastlane offers delicious chicken and gas station burritos while the best of steak and fish can be had at The Old Fill Inn Station. Sadie’s Restaurant, Dickey’s Smokehouse, and Cedar Hill Resort are other must-try eating joints.
Residents and visitors also have access to high-speed Internet. Winfield is a Century Link Internet City and offers DSL and Fiber connectivity of the highest quality to the rest of the country.
