The city of Olympia was incorporated in 1859. Colonel Isaac Neff Ebey, the local resident of the city suggested the city name as Olympia which was named after the Olympic Mountains. Before that, this city has several different names like Cheetwoot, Smither, etc. In 1949, an earthquake occurred in the city due to which several historic buildings were damaged.
